Longtime Glasgow businessman, Danny Wayne Gibson, 76, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
Danny was the son of the late Rev. Jessie (Mutt) and Marie Gibson and graduated from Metcalfe County High School in 1966 where he was very proudly voted “Mr. Metcalfe” as a senior. He was also President of his senior class.
Following graduation from high school, he joined the United States Navy where he served about four years. He was based out of Naples, Italy on the USS Tallahatchie County and later transferred to the USS Saratoga in Jacksonville, Florida.
Danny began his career in the auto industry in 1975 at Peterson Buick and then purchased half of the dealership in 1981. He worked for Mr. Peterson for five years prior to purchasing and then joined forces with Marshall Bailey. The pair then formed Bailey Gibson Buick, Pontiac, GMC. After Mr. Bailey’s retirement in 2003, Danny became the sole owner and CEO of the dealership, now known as Bailey Gibson GMC. For half a century, Mr. Gibson devoted his life to the automotive industry by serving his trade in many roles whether it be through his business or as a personal effort to benefit his community.
Danny, or Dandy, as his grandchildren called him, had a deep love for his family, his business family, his community and his country. He was active in his community throughout his life by serving on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and later as president of the Chamber Board. In 2002, he was appointed to the Glasgow Housing Authority, serving over 23 years in that role and fulfilling the role of Chairman of the Board in later years.
He was always a supporter of law enforcement whether it be local or state. He was recognized by the Barren County Drug Task Force for 20 years of dedication as the Citizen At Large to their organization. He was an active supporter of the Kentucky State Police Trooper Island, which served hundreds of young people in the summer.
His reputation for humor and pulling pranks continued from high school throughout his entire life. Getting the best of someone through one of his well-known pranks brought him great joy!
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mariam Underwood Gibson; two children, a son, Dr. Adam Gibson, and his wife, Kelly, of Columbus, Ohio, and a daughter, Sarah Gibson Zulz and her husband, Jeremy, of Glasgow; four grandchildren, Crew and Maeve Gibson of Columbus, Ohio, and Lola and Wren Zulz of Glasgow; one sister, Connie Branstetter (Earlene) of Three Springs; a brother in law, Rollin D. (Buddy) Underwood (Anne Grant) of Glasgow and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Gibson and his wife, Mary, as well as his mother and father-in-law, Rollin and Marjorie Dougherty Underwood and his parents as mentioned above.
