Douglas Wayne Coomer 74 of Glasgow died Friday morning April 1, 2016 at T. J. Samson Community Hospital. He was a son of the late Emit and Ann Lizzie Judd Coomer and the husband of Betty Faye Bishop Coomer for 52 years who survives. He was a life-long farmer. For many years he raised registered Holsteins and ran a Grade A Dairy. In 1971 he was named Outstanding Member of the Year in the South Central District of the Kentucky Young Farmers Association and competed with four other members of the Young Farmers Association from across Kentucky for the coveted Young Farmer of the year award. He was also chosen as the Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year by the Glasgow-Barren Co. Chamber of Commerce. He served in the Army National Guard-HHB 1st BN 623rd Field Artillery, Glasgow, KY from July 3, 1964 to Sept. 8, 1969 attaining the rank of Sergeant. On August 4, 1984 he was severely injured in a farming accident and was left a quadriplegic. He remained a faithful member of Basil Chapel United Baptist Church where he had belonged since July 1955. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son Kevin Douglas Coomer (Angie) of Cave City; a daughter Kathy Proffitt (Terry) of Glasgow; a granddaughter Julie Rae Coomer and a grandson Jacob Walton Coomer; a brother Harold Coomer (Shirley) of Glasgow; a sister Aline Smith of Glasgow; brother-in-law James T. Kerley of Glasgow; 2 sisters-in-law Donna Coomer of Virginia and Glenna Coomer of Glasgow and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 3 brothers Cortez, C. G. and Carter Coomer; a sister Norma Jean Kerley; sister-in-law Olene Coomer; brother-in-law Raymond Smith; a nephew Randell Coomer and his in-laws Virgil and Catherine Bishop who thought of him as a son. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, April 4th at Basil Chapel United Baptist Church with burial in Cave City Cemetery. Visitation will be at A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home Saturday from 5pm until 8pm, Sunday from 8am until 8pm and Monday from 8am until time for the service.
