Fred Hubert Smith, 86 of Owensboro, passed away on Monday October 28, 2013 at his daughter's home. He was born February 4, 1927 in Daviess County to the late Charles and Flossie Pate Smith. He was retired from State of Kentucky as manager of the Owensboro Office of Employment Services. He was a US NAVY veteran during World War II and Korean War. He was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral, T.P.A., Knights of Columbus, The American Legion and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Simmons Smith in 2003, they were married for 53 years; also preceded in death by his son, Larry Smith; daughter, Gail Hayes; brothers, Gene Smith and Joseph Smith; sister, Anna McCarter. Surviving are his daughters, Sheilla Johnson of Winter Garden, Florida, Regenia Sims of Owensboro; grandchildren, Joshua (Penny) Sims, Beth (Jimmy) Jones both of Owensboro and Jonathan Hayes of Louisville, Ky.; and three great-grandchildren, Ashton, Hunter and Trinity Jones. Burial Mass will be at 12:00pm. Thursday at St. Stephen Cathedral. Visitation at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home from 2:00 to 8:00pm. Wednesday and from 10:00 to 11:30am. Thursday. Father Jerry Riney will officiate. Prayers will be said at 6:30pm. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery with Military Honors. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky and St. Labre Indian School, 1000 Tongue River Road, Ashland, MT. 59003.
