Frederick Elvin Barton, age 76, died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Brighton Gardens in Brentwood, Tennessee. The youngest child and only son after four daughters, Fred was born on September 20, 1936, on the family farm near South Fork Road in Barren County, Kentucky. Farming was his first occupation, but he earned his real estate license and began a company with Wallace Bartley in the sixties. Their first project was the construction of Goodman Candy Company in 1965. Bartley & Barton Construction built many homes in Glasgow and the surrounding area. Later, Barton Construction Company and Barton Specialty Construction built several local landmarks such as Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library on College Street, Glasgow Golf & Country Club, and the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street. Mr. Barton also built his own office building, the distinctive A-frame structure that stood on the corner of Main Street and the By-Pass. He was particularly proud to have performed renovations at both Glasgow's Historic Fort Williams and the Jefferson Davis Monument in Fairview, Kentucky. During his career, he worked on more than 100 projects all across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Fred is survived by his wife the former Jessie Farris Smith of Nashville, TN; one sister Imogene Schooler of Fisherville, KY; three daughters, Beth Barton of Raleigh, NC, Anne Brickeen and husband Brian of Oviedo, FL, and Kathy Earley and husband Burke of Youngsville, NC; one stepdaughter Kathy Anderson and husband David Malloy of Nashville, TN; two stepsons, Kelly Smith and wife Trish of Nashville, TN, and Jason Smith and wife Samantha of Brentwood, TN; five grandchildren, Daniel, David, & Sarah Beth Brickeen and Ballard & Eleanor Earley; six step grandchildren, Elliott & Asher Anderson, Nealie & Jesse Smith, and Milan & Jared Smith; three nephews; eight nieces; numerous great nieces and nephews; and several great-great nieces and nephews. Mr. Barton was preceded in death by his parents Elvin and Tressie Barton; his sisters Mary Jane Farr, Eleanor Potter, and Ernestine Britt; and one niece Janet Duff. Visitation will be Monday from 4 -7 PM at A. F. Crow and Son Funeral Home, 201 East Washington Street, Glasgow, KY. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, May 14th at 2:00. Burial will be in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. The family would like to extend deepest gratitude to the staff at Brighton Gardens, an assisted living facility where Fred lived since June 2012.
