James L. Mason, Jr. 84 of Glasgow and a native of New York, died Wednesday November 5, 2008 at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. He was the son of the late James Lawrence Mason Sr. and Elizabeth Robertson Mason. He was accepted as a cadet to the U.S. Merchant Marine Acadamy in King Point, Long Island, NY and served his tour of duty. In 1943 he was commissioned as an Engineering Officer in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Santee for 56 months in both the Atlantic and Pacific war zones. His ship was awarded two Presidential citations and nine combat stars for their duty against the enemy. He graduated from the Polytechnical Institute of New York with a bachelor's degree in Engineering. He also took post graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia in Business Education. Mr. Mason first came to Glasgow as an engineer with SKF, to build the SKF/Tyson Bearing Company. He later returned to Glasgow to be the Tyson Plant engineering manager. He was an active member of the Glasgow Lions Club for 30 years and has been chairman, and a board member for the Salvation Army and the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library Property Board. He was a member and served as an Elder of the Glasgow First Prebyterian Church. He was married to his beloved wife Eleanor Cserhaty Mason who survives and is also survived by three children, Suzanne Huff (Kenneth) of Connecticut, James L. Mason III (Beth) of Colorado and Nancy Kenney (Anthony) of Glasgow; 1 granddaughter Lauren M. Kenney of Hattiesburg, Miss. and one lonesome dog Luke who misses his dad. Funeral services will be 2:00pm Sunday November 9, 2008 at the Glasgow First Presbyterian Church with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 2:00pm until 8:00pm and on Sunday from 11:00am until time for the service.
