Jerry Dene Houchens 71 of Herrin, IL and a former Glasgow resident, died Saturday May 8, 2004 at the Herrin Hospital. He was born May 11, 1932 in Barren County, KY to the late William Robert and Grace Atnip Houchens. Mr. Houchens served with the Army National Guard during the Korean War and was a life member of the DAV, as well as an ordained minister, having attended Western Kentucky State College, Campbellsville College and the Baptist Seminary in Louisville. Jerry was retired as Executive Director of the Boy Scouts of America. He served with the Boy Scouts in Kentucky, Delaware, Missouri, Illinois and Nebraska. He was promoted and received awards many times during his thirty-two years of service. He was a member of Rotary for more than forty years and received the Paul Harris Fellow. After retirement in 1992 he served Glasgow Baptist Church as an Adult Sunday School Teacher. He also taught Bible Classes at the nursing home for several years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Herrin. He is survived by his wife Gloria Marie Houchens; a daughter Vicki Jeffery; a step- son Greg Penninger and wife Jody; a step-daughter Kim Campe and husband Kevin; 7 grandchildren Brittney & Sidney Jeffery, Desi, Shawn & Heather Rosanna Peninger, Theresa & Michael Campe; a great granddaughter Kaylin Penninger and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin brother Eugene Houchens and a sister Marie Warren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday May 12, 2004 at A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Military rites will be performed at graveside. Visitation will be from 9:00am until time of service Wednesday at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
