Leonard Clark Haines, 85, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on October 17, 2023 with his wife at his side. Leonard was born at home on June 16, 1938 in what was known as Gypsy Hill, MD (Taylorsville). He is the last surviving child of Walter Turner Haines, Sr. and Mary P. Wantz Haines. He was married to his beloved Wife Sandra Belt Haines for 35 years.
Leonard spent his youth on his Family’s Farm. In 1953, the family moved to Westminster. Leonard attended Westminster High School and was a member of the graduating class of 1956. He excelled in soccer and auto mechanics. Leonard was a member of the Army National Guard Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 110th Artillery from 1956 – 1966 where he achieved the rank of Motor Staff Sergeant. He worked as a mechanic for Wolf Motor Company, Harken Ford, and Divver Ford in Westminster. In 1968 at the age of 30, he opened his own shop, Leonard C. Haines Automotive Repair. He was open for 20 years until 1988. He once said that he only had 1 day in twenty years that he didn’t have enough work to do. People would often wait 3 to 4 weeks to get an appointment. After closing his business, Leonard went to work for the Carroll County Government as Vehicle Maintenance Foreman. He held that position from 1988 – 1998. In June 1998, he fulfilled his dream of moving to Northwest Montana. Once settled, he worked for Glacier Steel Company as a truck driver. He spent his spare time hunting, fishing, gardening, doing carpentry work and camping. In 2017 he moved back East, first to Cave City, KY and then in 2021 to Waynesboro, PA.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael Haines and wife Stephanie of Westminster; daughter, Lisa Haines Hill and husband Steve of Whitefish, MT; step-daughter, Jaclyn Weiser of Durham, NC; grandsons, Randall Turner Haines and wife Ashley of Cockeysville, MD and Zachary Steven Hill of Whitefish, MT; great grandson, Lucas Turner Haines of Cockeysville, MD; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
