Lorraine “Lorene” Williams Atkins, 88, a native of Tennessee, and a longtime resident of Glasgow, died peacefully on September 7, 2023, after a long and full life.
Raised on a farm in Tennessee, where she graduated from Portland High School. Active in 4H, and runner up as the Portland Strawberry Festival Queen. She met her husband while he served in the Airborne, and she married in a courthouse ceremony at the age of 19. They were married for 65 years before John passed. Her work was administrative and a Watson’s employee. She finally achieved her dream of becoming a nurse. Attending Glasgow LPN school, she graduated with the Top award for excellence in Nursing. She chose Long Term Care, as she loved tending to those who needed extra care and gentleness as their time slipped by. Her nickname was “Sargent”, as she gave and expected the best from everyone. She wore her starched whites and cap until she retired. Her love for the farm, pups, flowers never waned.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Atkins Matheis (Dennis) of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons, John Atkins Jr. of Knoxville, TN, and Steve Atkins (Christa) of Bowling Green, KY; three grandchildren, Nick Matheis of St. Louis, MO, Kate Matheis of Christ Church, New Zealand, and Alex Matheis (Kelly) of Southport, CT; four great grandchildren, Cora, Evan, Tristan, and Tommy; one sister, Christine Eecloo of Canada.
In addition to her husband, John Atkins, she was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher, and Valley Williams; five brothers, Jack, Henry, Tude, Fred, and Billy; one sister, Pauline.
A private family graveside service will be held Monday September 11, 2023, at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Public visitation will be on Monday from 11AM to 12:30PM at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home.
