Mary Carraway Mitchell, 91, died peacefully May 16, 2011 in Jackson, MS. Meme, as she was known to her children's friends and family, was born August 14, 1919 in Jackson, MS to Thomas Luther Carraway, Sr. and Marion McNair Carraway. She had two younger brothers Thomas Luther Carraway, Jr (Pat) and William Cameron Carraway (Will) and enjoyed her status as the only girl within the family. Mary was reared and attended school in Jackson, MS. She graduated from Central High School on June 4, 1937. She attended Millsaps College, Jackson, MS, then transferred her Senior year to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she graduated June 2, 1941. Mary was an active member of Chi Omega sorority. Her academic success was recognized by being inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society. In 1948 she met and married John Terry Mitchell of Glasgow, KY. They lived happily in Glasgow for 50 years. Her volunteer work included working as an Aide in Education for the second grade at Liberty Street School; 1966-1974; Cub Scout Den Mother for 3 years, also participated and served as chairperson for events of the WOC of First Presbyterian Church. She was an active member of and hosted meetings for the DAR; Colonial Dames; and both local and state Garden Clubs. In Jackson, MS Mary was a charter member of the High Noon Luncheon Club. Throughout her life Mary enjoyed traveling throughout the world, working in her garden, playing in her weekly bridge clubs, entertaining her many friends and caring for her family. John and Mary treasured boating activities with family and friends on Old Hickory Lake. In addition to their lake house, they belonged to The Nashville Yacht Club and Cedar Creek Yacht Club. Meme's family will always remember her for her zest for life, southern hospitality, wonderful meals as well as her loving presence. Mary was preceded in death by her husband John, parents, and brothers. She leaves behind her daughter, Mary Cecelia Mitchell Jones (Paul) of Nashville, TN and her son Geoffrey Carraway Mitchell (Christine) of Jackson, MS. She had three grandchildren, Mary McLaurin Fogel Porter (Waring), John Terry Mitchell, II and Hunter Lee Mitchell as well as three great grandchildren Eric Alexander Porter, Mary Grace Porter, and Andrew Clarke Porter and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caring staff of The Orchard and Odyssey Healthcare for the wonderful attention they provided for Mary. A visitation will be held at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home, 1161 Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS on Wednesday May 18, 2011 from 5 to 7 PM. Funeral services will be held in Glasgow, KY at the A.F. Crow Funeral Home on Friday at 2:00 PM with visitation one hour prior to services.
