Sarah A. Bowers 79 of Glasgow, KY died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the Barren County Health Care Center. She was born in Barren County to the late Roger C. Smith and Nola Miller Smith. Mrs. Bowers retired from the State ICF Hospital where she served as the Volunteer Service Coordinator. She was married March 18, 1948 to the late John R. Bowers and attended Poplar Log Church of Christ. She graduated from Temple Hill High School Class of 1946 and Indiana Business College Class of 1947. Mrs. Bowers was a member of various civic organizations including Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, the National Historical Society and Business & Professional Women's Club where she served as president. She was instrumental in spearheading the Roller Coaster Fair, the first Highland Games, The Kentucky Vicksburg Monument Association, the movement and restoration of the Freedom School House now known as Walter D. Freedom Center at Freedom, Kentucky. Mrs. Bowers served as chairperson for the Bicentennial Celebration of Barren County. There were many other involvements too numerous to mention which she was a part of because she loved her community and her county. Survivors include a brother, Stanley Eugene Smith (Caroljean) of Temple Hill, two sisters, Rebecca Wilson of Las Vegas, NV and Katherine Peden of Temple Hill; a half-brother, Deldean Smith (Sally) of Scottsdale, AZ and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Smith. Services will be at 10 AM Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 4 PM Tuesday, March 18, 2009 at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family request contributions to the Smith Cemetery, Virginia Simmons, 409 W. Cherry Street, Glasgow, KY 42141 or to the Poplar Log Cemetery, Charles Turner, 13068 Tompkinsville Road, Glasgow, KY 42141.
