Virginia Downing

Virginia Frances Akers Downing, 91, of Glasgow, KY died Monday, June 24, 2013, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. Born in Glasgow on June 1, 1922, she was a daughter of the late George H. Akers, Sr. and Mamie Alice Goff Akers. Virginia was a graduate of Glasgow High School (1939) and Sullins College in Bristol, VA. She was a homemaker, a former employee of the New Farmers National Bank, and more recently had been associated with her late husband, John Calloway ('J.C.') Downing, in Cook & Downing Insurance Agency (now Cook, Downing, & Underwood.) J.C. and Virginia had been married for 63 years at the time of his death. She was a longtime member of the Glasgow Baptist Church and the 3 L's Sunday School Class, and was a member of the Glasgow Garden Club. She is survived by two daughters who adored her, Anne Grant Underwood and husband Buddy, and Jenny Jean Downing, all of Glasgow; two grandchildren, Josh Underwood and wife Sabrina of Glasgow, and Jenny Kate Guy and husband, Jamie, of Mableton, GA; one great-granddaughter, Anniston Banks Guy, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, George Homer Akers, Jr. of Glasgow and two sisters, Elizabeth Caroland of St. Louis, MO, and Marjorie Mazur of Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial contributions to the Glasgow Baptist Church, Barren River Animal Welfare Association (BRAWA) or Community Medical Care.
